Three Cost-Conscious Trends Reshaping Culture

By Baylee Burke

In 2025, how are consumers finding ways to indulge, personalize, and stay stylish without overspending?

During a period of economic uncertainty, rising prices and financial caution, consumers are forced to rethink how they spend. Amid these pressures, small luxuries and clever alternatives are emerging as powerful new forces shaping the way people shop and live. From affordable treats to at-home rituals and high-quality dupes, consumers are proving that joy doesn’t have to come with a high price tag.

Here are three trends redefining consumption this year:

Treatenomics: The Power of Small Luxuries

In an era of tighter budgets, consumers aren’t cutting out pleasure but indulging more thoughtfully. Treatonomics describes the growing tendency to seek out small, affordable luxuries, often just $5-$10, that deliver far more emotional value than their price tag suggests.

Why? In uncertain times, people are pulling back on bigger purchases but still crave comfort and joy. A seasonal snack, a scented candle, or a quirky collectible can serve as a daily mood-booster and a non-negotiable for some.

And it’s everywhere. According to a survey from NCSolutions, 62% of Americans say little treats are essential to their self-care routines, with nearly half incorporating them regularly. On TikTok, the “little sweet treat” meme has generated millions of views, turning these small daily pleasures into a shared cultural moment.

Brands are continuing to capitalize on the appeal of these small indulgences. Trader Joe’s viral mini canvas tote bag or Crumbl Cookies’ weekly rotating flavors are examples of how simple products can become highly anticipated rituals. By offering unique, limited-time offerings at accessible prices, these brands make everyday moments feel special and keep consumers coming back.

The Rise of At-Home Coffee

As café prices climb and customization upcharges add up, at-home coffee culture has become one of the most common expressions of treatonomics. More people are skipping the coffee run and making their favorite drinks at home, with flavored syrups, cold foam, and all. It’s a small daily pick-me-up that feels personalized and satisfying, while still being budget-friendly.

The data backs it up, too: 71% of U.S. coffee drinkers now make their coffee at home. Social media has only accelerated the shift, turning seasonal lattes and flavor-forward recipes into viral trends that are easy to replicate in your own kitchen.

Our client, the global flavor company Torani, offers an easy way to bring this everyday indulgence to life. With over 150 syrup flavors, from classics including Vanilla and Caramel, timely favorites like Pumpkin Spice, to even fantasy flavors such as Galaxy or Diamond, Torani’s products make it easy for consumers to customize their drinks without sacrificing flavor, quality, or budget.

The “Dupe Economy”

These days, it seems like everyone loves a good dupe. The lower-cost alternatives can offer the same look, feel, or performance, just without the high price tag. And while not every dupe is equal, many are getting so close in quality that some shoppers say they can hardly tell the difference. What once may have been dismissed as a knock-off is now seen as a clever way to access trends without overspending.

Social media is even getting in on the trend. On TikTok, the hashtag #dupe has been viewed billions of times, with many creators posting side-by-side comparisons or dupe hauls that spotlight affordable swaps.  The “dupe economy” doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon, either. According to Google search data, global searches for the term “dupe” rose 40% year-over-year, signaling that consumers are actively seeking affordable alternatives across categories, with beauty, fashion, and home leading the way.

In the growing dupe market, a few brands have emerged as clear favorites. Perfume brand Dossier has built its following by creating high-quality versions of beloved designer fragrances, openly naming the scents they’re inspired by and offering them at a fraction of the cost. In activewear, CRZ Yoga has gained traction as a go-to Lululemon alternative, winning over consumers with athleisure that rivals the fit and feel of the original, without the big spend.

Collectively, these trends highlight a powerful cultural shift: consumers aren’t giving up joy, style, or quality, but instead simply finding smarter, more cost-conscious ways to access them. Whether it’s a $5 cookie, a café-worthy latte at home, or a fragrance inspired by a designer favorite, people are proving that little luxuries still matter.
