“4pm until the cops arrive” read 87-year-old Doug Turner’s handwritten Winter Party invitation. Doug and his late wife hosted an annual Winter Solstice party, inviting a handful of their neighbors in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Doug has since kept the tradition alive, delivering handwritten invitations to his neighbors in person. When a community member posted about the upcoming party, TikTok couldn’t get enough.

The heartwarming video that started it all was a Ring Camera recording of Doug delivering an invitation at a neighbor’s doorstep. Since then, fans have created merch, meme content, and sent fan mail expressing their love and support. You can even live stream the event from wherever you live. People from all over the world want to be a part of #dougswinterparty2025

What started as a small neighborhood gathering has turned into a viral event with people tuning in around the globe. What made it stick, and what can we learn from this viral social media phenomenon?

Leading with kindness

When a heartwarming story makes national headlines, it’s refreshing. Society is inundated with bad news. Pure kindness seems hard to come by, and when we do encounter it, it’s chicken soup for the soul. After Michael Bublé discovered Doug’s Winter Party, he shared his awe on TikTok: “I was just on my [for you page] and I saw something that didn’t make me sad […] finally […] it wasn’t like the world is coming to an end.” Indeed, Doug’s story is a breath of fresh air.

Building community

In today’s digital age, society is lonelier than ever. Doug’s tradition brought his community together, welcoming all ages and fostering a sense of belonging. We all want a neighbor like Doug who makes an effort to connect with those around him.

Using humor

“4pm until the cops arrive” is a line Doug often uses in his annual invitations. This lighthearted joke helped make the event quotable and shareable. It became the event’s tagline and fueled meme content across social media. Fans even turned the line into merch
